What is the Topcon MC-MAX and how does it differ from older systems?

MC-MAX is the successor to Topcon’s older excavator solutions, built on the modular MC-X platform. It features upgraded processing power, faster communication speeds, and utilizes modern CAN bus technology and high-speed IMUs to provide significantly smoother, real-time bucket tracking compared to older analog systems.

What are the main improvements over the previous GT-600/X-series era tech?

The biggest advancements are in modularity and speed. MC-MAX uses TS-i4 IMU sensors that process data much faster than previous generations, resulting in a more responsive “live” bucket display. Furthermore, the hardware is now interchangeable across dozers, graders, and excavators, simplifying fleet management.

How do the IMU sensors improve bucket accuracy?

Multiple TS-i4 3-axis IMUs mounted on the body, boom, stick, and bucket measure tilt and acceleration 100 times per second. Because these are inertial sensors, they remain stable in high-vibration environments, allowing operators to maintain millimetre accuracy even during rapid arm movements.

Is the MC-MAX compatible with both the GT-700 and GT-600 robotic stations?

Yes. When configured for LPS mode, MC-MAX is fully compatible with both the latest GT-700 series and the older GT-600 series robotic total stations. This setup is ideal for high-precision work in areas where GNSS signals are blocked, such as tunnels or deep cuttings.

Can I switch between 2D and 3D guidance on the same machine?

Absolutely. MC-MAX offers complete flexibility, allowing you to run in 2D mode for simple tasks like digging flat pads or switch to 3D mode for complex digital designs. It can also be upgraded to 3D Automatic mode, where the system controls the hydraulics to maintain grade.
