What is the biggest difference between the TS20 and the TS16?

The TS20 is a ground-up redesign featuring an “AI-powered” Neural Processing Unit (NPU) and a move to a Linux-based OS for faster boot times. It also introduces whisper-quiet brushless motors and a significant upgrade to an IP66 environmental rating.

How does the AI-powered “AI-Detect” feature prevent site errors?

AI-Detect uses the NPU to visually recognize the specific prism in use. If the software setting differs from the physical target (e.g., using a 360° prism when set to circular), the TS20 alerts the operator immediately, preventing small but costly millimetre errors.

What is “AI-Follow” and how does it work with the AP20 AutoPole?

AI-Follow uses the AI to predict movement and estimate where an operator will emerge after walking behind obstacles like excavators or site huts. This allows the instrument to re-lock onto the AP20 almost instantly once the operator is back in view.

How does the AP20 AutoPole solve the “Pole Height” problem?

The AP20 automatically measures and communicates the pole height to the TS20 in real-time. Whether the pole is collapsed to clear a cable or extended for visibility, the software updates automatically, eliminating one of the most common manual data entry errors.

Can the TS20 be used as part of a “Hybrid” package?

Yes, the TS20 is often paired with a Leica GS18 T GNSS rover for a “SmartPole” setup. This allows operators to switch seamlessly between robotic and GPS measurements, ensuring continuous work in deep trenches or under heavy tree cover where one technology might struggle.

Does the AI Detect function work with non-Leica targets?

The TS20 has an onboard “AI-Detect” feature that recognises the type of target being measured. If you use a non-Leica prism, the AI might notify you that the target signature does not match your currently selected prism type in the software, but you can override this and measure anyway.

What happens to a stolen TS20 if a thief removes the SIM card or cuts the antenna?

It doesn’t rely solely on a clear GPS sky. The module uses a low-frequency hybrid radio array that references local cellular towers and ambient Wi-Fi MAC addresses to pinpoint its location, even indoors, inside a shipping container, or deep underground. If the instrument fails to securely check in with the Hexagon cloud servers, the main motherboard completely bricks itself on a hardware level, rendering the total station totally unusable and worthless for resale.
